Roland Dyens linking the world of Jazz Improvisation and Classical Guitar
Roland Dyens begins his concerts with an original, improvisational piece created especially for his immediate audience. Preferring to announce his program from the stage as the evening unfolds, Dyens creates an unique and warm connection with his audience imparting a performance that is true to his feelings at the moment. Dyens brings a sensitive, open-minded and colorful approach to the guitar which brings together all forms of music to each and every one of his programs. His stage presence, improvised openings and singular relationship with listeners positions him at the forefront of guitar performance today. His compositions and arrangements are widely performed and highly acclaimed throughout the world.
Born in 1955, Dyens began guitar studies at the age of nine and four years later became a student of the Spanish master guitarist Alberto Ponce. He studied composition with the renowned teacher, composer and orchestra director, Dèsirè Dondeyne. At the age of 33 he was recognized as one of the 100 best living guitarists in all styles by the French magazine “Guitarist.” In September 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Golden Guitar - 2006 for his lifetime contributions to composition by the Presidency of International Guitar Competition in Italy. The Guitar Foundation of America chose Roland Dyens to compose the mandatory “set piece” for their 2007 International Guitar Competition. This composition “Anyway” continues to receive enthusiastic world-wide reviews. In July of 2008 International Guitar Festival of Fiugge, Italy recognized Dyens with their Lifetime Achievement in Composition Award.
